<p>Nature exposure includes positive nature exposure as well as negative nature exposure. Earlier research has primarily examined the influence of positive nature exposure on pro-environmental behavior (PEB), frequently ignoring the role of negative nature exposure. Negative nature exposure may influence PEB as well. The present study explored the effects of both negative and positive nature exposure on PEB. A cross-sectional study was carried out in China. The sample consists of 824 Chinese adults, including 318 men (38.6%) and 506 women (61.4%). The Nature Exposure Scale, New Ecological Paradigm Scale, PEB Scale, and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI, the degree of greenness around the residence) were used to test the proposed model. We constructed a moderated mediation model. The results showed that both negative and positive nature exposure significantly predicted PEB, and environmental concern mediated the association between positive/negative nature exposure and PEB. NDVI played a moderator between negative nature exposure and environmental concern. Specifically, negative nature exposure significantly predicted environmental concern when NDVI was lower. However, negative nature exposure did not significantly predict environmental concern when NDVI was higher. NDVI did not play a moderator between positive nature exposure and environmental concern. Future research should address the limitations of self-reporting through experimental approaches and delve into the internal neural mechanisms of nature exposure using neuroscience techniques such as electroencephalogram (EEG).</p>
