Supervisor bottom-line mentality and their family ostracism: the mediating role of emotional exhaustion
摘要
The vast majority of existing theory and research to date on supervisor bottom-line mentality (SBLM) has focused on how SBLM influences subordinates. In contrast, our study shifts this predominant focus to examine the effects of SBLM on supervisors themselves. Based on the conservation of resources (COR) theory, we propose that SBLM triggers resource losses for supervisors, leading to emotional exhaustion, which may spill over into the family domain and result in family ostracism. Moreover, the relationship between SBLM and supervisor emotional exhaustion is moderated by performance climate; that is, when the level of performance climate is high, the relationship is stronger (vs. weaker). Our research model proposes an integrative moderated mediation effect, where performance climate amplifies the indirect impact of SBLM on family ostracism through emotional exhaustion. Our hypotheses were supported by three-wave time-lagged survey data collected in China. Theoretical and practical implications stemming from our research findings are thoroughly discussed.
