Effects of mindful self-compassion training on improving the sense of self-criticism and shame in mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder
摘要
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of mindful, self-compassion training on the sense of self-criticism and shame in mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study was semi-experimental and had a pre- and post-test design, and a control group. The sample population consisted of 30 mothers of children with ASD who visited welfare clinics across Tehran, Iran, between April and June 2021. These mothers were voluntarily recruited, using a convenience sampling method, based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. They were randomly assigned to the experimental or control groups. Before the training commenced, the participants responded to two questionnaires: (a) Level of Self-Criticism, and (b) Internalized Shame Scale. The experimental group participated in an 8-sessionself-compassion training, while the control group did not. After the training, both groups completed the questionnaires again and were followed up for three months thereafter. The data from the questionnaires were analyzed on SPSS software, version 28. The findings, based on the repeated-measure analyses of variance, indicated significant differences between the two groups regarding their mean scores for self-criticism and internalized shame immediately at the post-test and follow-up periods (P < 0.05). The analyses indicated that the self-compassion training proved to be effective and significantly lowered the self-criticism and sense of shame in the mothers of children with ASD. Given the findings, the self-compassion intervention was effective on self-criticism and internalized shame in the mothers.
