The Network structure of autism traits, Alexithymia, sleep problems and aggression

Sleep problems, alexithymia, and aggression are commonly comorbid with autism spectrum disorders or linked to autistic traits (ATs). However, a comprehensive understanding of the intricate interconnections among these variables is lacking. Network analysis was used to explore the complex relationships among the mentioned variables. Employing a cross-sectional survey design, we recruited 761 university students to complete online questionnaires assessing their ATs, aggression, sleep problems, and alexithymia. Network analysis was conducted to identify core and bridge symptoms within the network and to compare network structures across varying levels of ATs. Our findings reveal that “self-aggression” exhibits the highest centrality in the network, followed by “hostile” and “difficulty identifying feelings (TAS1)”. Notably, “TAS1”, “daytime dysfunction”, “self-aggression” and “hostile” are identified as bridge symptoms. Moreover, we observed a significantly weaker overall network strength in the high ATs group in comparison to the low ATs group. The unraveling of symptom interplay in our study offers fresh insights for comprehending the psychological health network associated with the autism spectrum. Interventions targeting sleep and alexithymia are potentially poised to untangle the network of these variables.
