A Descriptive Analysis of the Most Viewed YouTube Videos Related to Teen Pregnancy
摘要
The United States’ teen birth rate remains higher than many other developed countries, yet there are no national requirements for education aimed at teen pregnancy prevention. During the past two decades, this persistent lack of guidance at the federal level is coupled with social media emerging as an increasingly dominant channel through which people, especially adolescents, learn about health. We did not identify any published studies describing the sources, nature and scope of information on social media relevant to teen pregnancy. To help fill the gap in current knowledge, this study analyzed sources, formats and content related to teen pregnancy on YouTube, a widely used social media site. The 100 most widely viewed YouTube videos on teen pregnancy were identified and coded to describe their source, format, date uploaded, length (in minutes), number of views, and content covered. The videos garnered 434,423,558 cumulative views. Videos were primarily uploaded by ‘Consumers’ (n = 38) followed by ‘Television/News Entertainment’ (n = 32). None of the most widely viewed videos were uploaded by public health professionals or governmental agencies responsible for public health education, indicating their limited reach with this increasingly important media channel. The content most covered in the videos were the pregnancy outcome, how the teen mother found out she was pregnant, the teen mother’s reaction to the pregnancy, and the involvement of various family members. The content of these videos suggests they have limited value for health education. Health education professionals and organizations clearly are not in control of the teen pregnancy narrative on YouTube, and it would behoove them to discover ways to create videos that are engaging to their intended audience. Based on this study, that would include Documentaries and Reality style programming.
