<p>The development of an individual’s overall identity is one of the major challenges during adolescence and emerging adulthood. Although there is an extensive literature on identity in general, there is still a lack of in-depth research attempting to explore the link between overall identity and sexual identity. Hence, the main goal of this study was to explore whether there is an association between personal and sexual identity in a group of Italian emerging adults, investigating the role of sexual orientation on the processes of identity construction, with the hypothesis that personal agency could be seen as a resource not only for the individual’s overall identity development, but also for the specific domain of sexuality. Participants were 252 Italian young adults aged 18–30. Correlation analyses were conducted to identify relationships between personal identity, sexual identity, and agentic personality traits. Adopting a person-centered approach, cluster analysis was performed in order to identify profiles based on Luyckx’s model and their interactions with the above mentioned variables. Results confirmed a significant association between overall and sexual identity, identifying agentic personality traits as a resource within the Italian context. Unexpected findings as well as limitations of this study and their practical implications are discussed.</p>
