<p>Much of the scholarly literature on sex tourism is critical of this enterprise. Prominent writers depict it as harmful to local sex workers and rooted in white Western tourists’ racism toward and exploitation of local people. This paper critically assesses these claims with the help of tourist and expat contributions to three forums devoted to sex work in the Philippines and Thailand. I analyzed 400 posts to identify the ways in which forum discourse either conforms to or departs from popular stereotypes regarding sex tourists, with a focus on how these actors explain and rationalize their involvement in sexual commerce while abroad. In explicating their efforts to normalize their behavior, I draw on two theoretical frameworks that have not previously been applied to sex tourism: neutralization techniques and differential association/identification theory.</p>
