<p>In recent decades, the privatisation process of social housing has become increasingly shaped by market-oriented discourse, generating significant debate in housing research. However, the literature on the comparative study of social housing privatisation has still been rare; existing typologies fail to keep pace with changes in housing systems. Hence, this paper offers a comparative analysis of social housing privatisation in the UK and China. The findings suggest a convergent trend towards social housing privatisation, while also revealing important contextual variations across city regions. Despite some ideological differences, local authorities tacitly endorse and encourage privatisation, resulting in a vague stance when it comes to supporting social housing and ultimately leading to its ‘demise’. This thesis contributes to developing existing comparative housing theories and provides new data at the city-region level.</p>
