<p><i>The Brownies’ Book</i> (1920–1921) was one of the first periodicals created primarily for African American children. This article demonstrates the power of photography in a section of the periodical titled “Little People of the Month” to depict African American children—and African Americans in general—as humane, successful, intelligent people. The article begins with a general discussion of <i>The Brownies’ Book</i>, followed by its “Little People of the Month” section and African Americans’ use of photography. It ends with the description and life story of a young man named Orin LeRoy Bracey, who was highlighted in the “Little People of the Month” section of the magazine’s November 1921 issue.</p>
