Elżbieta Halas’s Reintroducing Florian Znaniecki proves timely in recovering a neglected thinker from sociology’s past. She does this by revealing new influences on Znaniecki’s thought, like French conventionalism, in addition to streams of thought that he influenced, above all “the Thomas theorem.” Halas’s book encourages sociologists to refamiliarize themselves with Znaniecki’s “culturalism.” In today’s space of possible position-takings, I argue that Znaniecki’s sociological thought is radical: while the concepts and terms are familiar, and sometimes shockingly contemporary, they are structured, entirely uniquely, around the principle of relativity.
