Clinical and Epidemiological Characteristics of Rotavirus Diarrhea and Rotavirus Genotypes Among Children Under 5 Years Hospitalized with Acute Gastroenteritis in North Karnataka, India

Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe dehydrating acute gastroenteritis among children aged < 5 y in India. This study compares the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of children with rotavirus-positive and -negative diarrhea and the prevalent rotavirus genotypes among children aged < 5 y hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis.
MethodsThis observational study enrolled children aged < 5 y hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis in two tertiary healthcare centers in North Karnataka, India. Clinical and sociodemographic data were collected using a standard form. Stool samples were tested for rotavirus, and rotavirus-positive samples were genotyped.
ResultsA total of 115 children were enrolled in the study. Of the 114 who had stool samples tested, 13 (11.4%) tested positive for rotavirus. Of the 13 cases of rotavirus-positive diarrhea, 11 (84%) were among children aged < 2 y; however, no significant difference in rotavirus prevalence was observed by sex (boys: 7/59 [12%] and girls: 6/55 [11%]; p = 0.873) or by rotavirus vaccination status (unvaccinated: 3/24 [13%] and vaccinated 10/90 [11%], p = 0.849). G3P[8] was the predominant genotype, present in 7/13 (53.8%) of the rotavirus-positive stool samples.
ConclusionsRotavirus diarrhea remains an important cause of severe gastroenteritis in children aged < 5 y, and G3P[8] was the most common genotype in North Karnataka during the study period. These findings have implications for vaccination strategies and public health initiatives aimed at reducing the burden of rotavirus infection in this population.
