The future of mobility: Assessing the impact and applications of blockchain technology in electric vehicle ecosystems

The future of mobility is experiencing an undeniable shift, driven by the growing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and their convergence with blockchain technology (BT). The integration of BT into EVs presents a unique opportunity for researchers and industry participants to solve complex challenges as electrifying road transportation intensifies. Thus, this paper provides a comprehensive review of blockchain-enabled EV innovations and investigates the current state of global industrial implementations. We first establish a foundational understanding of BT and EVs, a prerequisite to comprehend their union as blockchain-enabled EVs. Then, we present a categorical survey of various applications, including autonomous mobility, security improvements, sustainable energy, charging infrastructure, and smart city integration. This review addresses the academic research literature and explores practical applications of these technologies. We provide an insightful overview of promising industry developments, featuring several start-up corporations and government-backed pilot projects. Finally, we specify gaps within the blockchain-enhanced EV domain, identifying current research challenges and presenting recommendations to help guide future directions for electric mobility.
