Role of Platelet-Rich Plasma in Treatment of Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a common and often irreversible condition resulting from damage to the inner ear or auditory nerve pathways. Recently, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has emerged as a promising regenerative therapy. In our study, we aim to assess the efficacy, safety, and outcome of Intratympanic platelet-rich plasma injection in patients with sensory-neural HL. This prospective single-arm interventional study was conducted at the ENT Department in ******* University Hospital on 60 patients presenting with SNHL. The procedure was carried out at our outpatient ENT clinic at ****** University Hospital. Pure tone audiometry (PTA) and speech audiometry were done for each patient prior to injection to be compared with their PTA, speech audiometry, HLHI, and THI score results after injection. Injection was repeated every 3 weeks for 3 times. PTA and speech audiometry were done 2 times for each patient. Sixty patients with SNHL (mean age 48.9 ± 17.1 years) were included. Significant improvements were observed in hearing thresholds at 3 months (p = 0.001), subjective hearing scores at 1 and 3 months (p < 0.001), speech discrimination at 1 month (p < 0.001) and 3 months (p = 0.03), and tinnitus scores at 1 and 3 months (p < 0.001). A significant positive correlation was found between the duration of HL and both hearing thresholds and subjective hearing scores at 3 months. Significant improvements were observed in hearing thresholds, speech discrimination, and tinnitus scores over three months, particularly in patients with shorter durations of HL. PRP’s regenerative effects are attributed to its high concentration of growth factors, with minimal side effects reported.
