Time to Rechristen the Inferior Thyroid Artery as Artery of the Parathyroid
摘要
Preservation of parathyroid gland is of paramount important in thyroid surgery. Any vascular injury or accidental removal of parathyroid leads to tetany and subsequently to morbidity. The blood supply of thyroid gland is described as from Superior thyroid artery a branch of External carotid artery and Inferior thyroid artery (ITA) a branch of Thyrocervical trunk. We the authors after extensive dissections and reviewing articles have come to conclusions that Inferior Thyroid Artery (ITA) is the prime supplier to superior and inferior both set of Parathyroid glands. So we (authors) recommend rechristening the Inferior Thyroid Artery (ITA) as Parathyroid artery (PTA).
