Early Newborn Hearing Screening in Live Births Within 72 h of Birth Using Otoacoustic Emission
摘要
Newborn hearing screening within 72 h of birth using transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE) and to study various risk factors associated with congenital hearing impairment. 1000 live births were screened, those having REFER results were followed up at 3rd and 6 months. The confirmation of hearing impairment was done using Brainstem evoked response audiometry (BERA). A total of 18 newborns had refer results on initial screening. On follow up at 3 months 17 newborns had refer results, 13 cases had refer result at 6 months. BERA showed hearing impairment in 4 newborns. Newborn screening is preferred over high risk newborn screening. Risk factors that were found to be associated with congenital hearing impairment were- Prolonged neonatal intensive care (> 5 days), Hyperbilirubinemia necessitating exchange transfusion and Syndromic newborn. While the rest of the newborn had no known risk factors.
