Prevalence of Allergic Rhinitis Among School Children Aged 10–15 Years in An Urban Area of South India: A Cross Sectional Study
摘要
Allergic rhinitis is a major public health problem in India and it is rising over past few decades. It can progress to Asthma which in itself leads to sleep disturbances, impedes growth, disrupt education, increases the socioeconomic burden and hence lowers the quality of life of the affected individuals, their family and society at large. A special attention has to be given to the highly affected group i.e., children in urban areas. Hence the study was conducted to identify the prevalence and risk factors for Allergic rhinitis among urban school children. A community based cross sectional study was conducted in an urban area of south India. Sample size was calculated to be 1140. Multistage random sampling method was used. Children aged between 10 and 15 years from the selected school were interviewed using pretested semi structured questionnaire developed using ISAAC (International study on Asthma and Allergies in Childhood) module. Descriptive statistics like mean, standard deviation, and inferential statistics like chi-square test, were used wherever applicable. Out of 1140 study subjects, 52.54% were males and 47.46% were females. The mean age of the participants was 12.57 ± 1.61 years. The prevalence of Allergic rhinitis among the children was found to be 19.82%. The prevalence was 19.04% amongst females and 20.53% amongst males. Significant association (p < 0.05) was observed between AR and family history of allergic disorders, passive smoking at house, ventilation and preterm birth. Allergic Rhinitis is a major health problem among urban school children.
