Effectiveness of Symphysis Bone Graft and Ramus or Body Bone Graft in Alveolar Bone Resorption: A Systematic Review and Meta Analysis

To review the existing scientific literature in providing a comprehensive, analysis on the effectiveness of symphysis bone graft compared to ramus or body bone graft in patients with bone resorption. Review was adhered Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines 2020 and registered in PROSPERO – CRD42025634635. Electronic databases were searched for studies evaluating the effectiveness of symphysis bone graft compared to ramus / body bone graft in patients with bone resorption and reporting outcomes through primary outcomes as increase in bucco-lingual width, horizontal height, density, volume and surface area of alveolar bone ridge and secondary outcome as post- operative complications. Quality assessment of included studies was evaluated through Cochrane risk of bias (ROB)-2 tool. Five studies fulfilled the eligibility criteria and were included in Qualitative synthesis and three studies for meta-analysis. Included studies revealed presence of low to moderate risk of bias. From the results of included studies, it was found that larger and thicker grafts were provided by ramus while the incidence of post-operative complications were more observed in symphysis. It was found that symphysis region produce more complications in terms of pain, postoperative bleeding, infection, pulp necrosis, mandibular fractures and sensory abnormalities as compared to ramus grafts. When assessing graft dimensions, ramus provide larger and thicker grafts. Additional clinical studies with bigger sample size and a longer follow up period should be carried out on assessing the secondary outcomes described to obtain an overall good quality evidence.
