<p>Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), most common cancer of head and neck has been more commonly reported in some geographic locations like south East Asia. Prior, to the development of carcinoma, precancerous changes are seen in the oral cavity which can be diagnosed histopathologically as various degrees of Epithelial Dysplasia. Therefore, preliminary diagnosis of OSCC and Oral Epithelial Dysplasia (OED) is necessary for prompt treatment, preventing increased morbidity. The present study aims to compare the expression of an immunohistochemical marker AJUBA in carcinoma as well as dysplasia to provide an approach for diagnosis as this has been not been studied till date. 19 histopathologically confirmed cases of OSCC and 5 of dysplasia were retrieved from archives, in different grading and stages. The paraffin-embedded tissue blocks were sent for immunohistochemical characterisation with AJUBA which was then examined microscopically and expression percentage was noted and conclusion were drawn. The highest IHC score was seen in severe epithelial dysplasia, whereas lesser scores and more variable pattern was seen in cases of OSCC. The mean score for all OSCC cases was almost found to be the same. To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate AJUBA expression in oral epithelial dysplasia and compare it with various grades of OSCC. This study concluded that AJUBA can only be used as proliferative marker, but it cannot predict different grades and stages of OSCC as well as OED. Further studies combining the use of western blot and PCR can confirm the present findings.</p>
