Correlation of External Nasal Deformity with Deviated Nasal Septum

The nasal septum plays a central role in maintaining the structural and functional integrity of the nose. A deviation in the septum is often associated not only with nasal obstruction but also with visible external nasal deformities (END), affecting aesthetics and quality of life. This prospective observational study aimed to determine the correlation between deviated nasal septum (DNS) and external nasal deformity in adult patients using Mladina’s and Yong Ju Jang’s classification systems. Forty-three adult patients attending the ENT OPD with DNS and/or END were clinically examined through anterior rhinoscopy, nasal endoscopy, anthropometric measurements, and standardized photography. The DNS was classified according to Mladina’s types, and external deformities were categorized as per Yong Ju Jang’s system. Among 43 patients, 62.8% exhibited external nasal deformity, most commonly Type III (51.9%). According to Mladina’s classification, Type V DNS was most frequent (32.5%). Chi-square analysis confirmed a significant correlation between Type V DNS and Type III END (p < 0.05), whereas no significant association was found between DNS type and nasal obstruction (p = 0.394). The study concludes that a structural link exists between septal deviation patterns and external nasal appearance, underscoring the importance of holistic preoperative assessment for septorhinoplasty.
