Audiological Study of Otitis Media with Effusion After Treatment with Intranasal Pulmonary Surfactant Drops

To study the otoscopic, tympanometric changes and curative effect of intranasal pulmonary surfactant (PS) drops on OME in guinea pigs. Hemophilus influenzae solution was injected into the tympanum to establish models of OME. 10 animals were selected as normal controls, 10 in the model-control group, 10 in the saline-treated group and 11 in the PS-treated group. Changes in the tympanic membrane and middle ear pressure were recorded by otoscopy and tympanometry, respectively. The tympanogram was type-A in the normal group and this changed to type-C in the model-control group and in the saline-treated group. The tympanogram changed to type-B in the PS-treated group. There were statistical differences in middle ear pressure and peak acoustic admittance between each group, except between the model-control group and the saline-treated group. The findings of the study indicate that administration of intranasal pulmonary surfactant drops plays an important role in decreasing effusion and correcting negative pressure in the middle ears of guinea pigs with otitis media with effusion.
