Post‑COVID‑19 Syndrome: Current Understanding – A Narrative Review
摘要
COVID-19 patients may experience persisting symptoms for weeks after acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, including dyspnea, fatigue, myalgia, insomnia, cognitive, and olfactory disorders. However, these symptoms may last for months in some patients, significantly affecting their daily activities. The definition of post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS) has evolved since its initial description. Initially, PCS was defined as the persistence of symptoms for more than 3 weeks after the onset of COVID-19, and chronic COVID-19 was defined as the persistence of symptoms for more than 12 weeks after the onset of COVID-19. Later, Yong further refined this definition, describing PCS or long-term COVID-19 as symptoms that persist for more than 3 months after the onset of COVID-19.The immune response to COVID-19 can sometimes be dysregulated, leading to excessive inflammation and tissue damage. Understanding these risk factors can help healthcare providers identify individuals who may be at increased risk of developing PCS and tailor interventions and support accordingly. Additionally, ongoing research is essential to further elucidate the underlying mechanisms and risk factors associated with PCS to improve prevention, management, and treatment strategies for affected individuals. Fatigue is indeed a prevalent symptom of post-COVID syndrome (PCS), affecting a significant portion of individuals who have recovered from the acute phase of the illness. It can persist for weeks to months after the resolution of the initial infection. Additionally, respiratory symptoms are common among PCS patients, with manifestations such as chest pain, dyspnea (shortness of breath), and exercise intolerance being reported frequently. Overall, the management of post-COVID syndromes requires a holistic and patient-centered approach that addresses the complex and diverse array of symptoms and complications experienced by individuals recovering from COVID-19. By implementing comprehensive treatment plans tailored to individual needs and promoting collaboration among healthcare providers, we can effectively support individuals with post-COVID syndromes on their path to recovery and improved quality of life.
