Comparison of Quality of Life in Children 12 months After Cochlear Implants and Those with Normal Hearing

Cochlear implants (CI) is an intervention method widely applied to improve hearing ability in children with hearing loss. This is the first study was conducted in Vietnam aiming to compare QoL between children who had undergone CI for 12 months and children with normal hearing. A cross-sectional design was conducted to compare two groups of 36 children who had received CI for 12 months and 72 children with normal hearing. QoL was assessed by parental or guardian interviews using the KINDL questionnaires. The mean age in the CI group was 5.3 ± 2.6 years, and in the normal hearing group was 5.7 ± 2.4 years, indicating age equivalence between the two groups. Other characteristics such as gender, birth order, and school attendance were also similar across groups. The median total QoL score was 73.44 (range from 67.71 to 82.29) in the CI group and 75.52 (range from 66.67 to 81.25) in the normal hearing group, with no statistically significant difference (p > 0.05). In the dimension of Self-esteem, the median score in the CI group was significantly lower compared to that of the normal hearing group (p < 0.05). The impact of CI on Self-esteem was primarily observed among children aged 3–6 years and among girls. Children who had undergone CI for 12 months demonstrated improved QoL, achieving scores comparable to those of children with normal hearing in terms of total score and most QoL dimensions.
