A Seventeen-Year Odyssey of Rhino-Orbito-Cerebral Mucormycosis (RCOM): Across the Severity Through the Eras of Before Covid (BC), During Covid (DC), and After Disease (AD)
摘要
To study the outcomes of patients with rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis, who were managed with functional endoscopic sinus surgery along with amphotericin, a 17-year study. Data was collected from KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital, patients who presented with diagnosed mucormycosis. With a sample size of 210, from January 2007 till December 2024, patients were evaluated on treatment compliance, recovery rate and the treatment success. 65 cases in 11 years, i.e. from 2007 to 2018 (Before COVID), 109 cases in 2019–2021 (During COVID) and 39 cases from 2022 to 2024 (After Disease). A devastating fungal illness, Rhino-Orbito-Cerebral Mucormycosis is typified by tissue necrosis, thrombosis, and vascular invasion. Before the COVID era, mucormycosis was prevalent amongst patient with Diabetic ketoacidosis, Renal insufficiency, patients with raised HbA1c levels and other risk factors. During COVID there was a sudden and huge rise in patients with mucormycosis due to steroid abuse. After covid, We present 210 mucormycosis cases that presented with rhino-orbital mucormycosis. The key to enabling the best possible therapy and better results is early detection, complete excision, management of risk factors and regular follow up of this potentially fatal infection.
