The Impact of Non-Allopathic Medications in Otorhinolaryngology Practices
摘要
Non-allopathic and herbal remedies are widely used in ENT disorders, often without medical oversight. Such practices, particularly when administered by untrained individuals, can result in severe complications. To assess adverse outcomes linked to unsupervised alternative therapies in ENT patients. A prospective study was carried out in the ENT department of Gauhati Medical College from October 2023 to October 2024. Fifty-two patients presenting with complications following herbal or other non-allopathic treatments were evaluated through detailed histories, clinical assessment, imaging, and histopathology, with management tailored to findings. Of the 52 patients, 32 (61.5%) were male. The largest age group was 31–45 years (34.6%), followed by 16–30 years (23.1%) and 46–60 years (19.2%). The most frequent complication was nasal septal perforation (46.2%), predominantly post-herbal medication use. Other diagnoses included nasal synechiae (32.7%), exaggerated rhinosinusitis (9.6%), facial cellulitis (5.8%), and isolated cases (1.9% each) of necrotic nasal mass, ulcerated fungating growth, and hypertrophic scar with pleomorphic adenoma. Unsupervised alternative therapies in ENT care are strongly associated with preventable morbidity, delayed diagnosis, and, in some cases, irreversible damage. Strengthened public education, practitioner regulation, and early specialist referral are essential to mitigate these risks.
