Comparative Evaluation of Aluminium Foil Nasal Splint with 3D Pen Designed Nasal Splint: Randomized Controlled Trial

Nasal fractures, a common facial injury, often result from traumatic events such as falls, assaults, or sports injuries, causing damage to the nasal bone and surrounding structures. Treatment options for nasal fractures typically involve reduction and stabilization, with the goal of restoring nasal function and aesthetics. However, the traditional splints can be cumbersome, causing discomfort and pressure points, and may not provide optimal support for complex nasal fractures. Recent advancements in 3D pen designed have enabled customized nasal splints designed to fit each patient’s nasal anatomy. The patient with nasal bone fracture reported in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery were included in the study. The patients were randomized into two group which are the control (10) and experimental group (10) This study consisted of Experimental group of patients with nasal bone fracture where the reduction of the fracture was done and was splinted with splint made with 3D pen and were evaluated on the post-op 1st & 7th day. Control group had patients with nasal bone fracture where the reduction of the fracture was done and was splinted with aluminium foil splint and were evaluated on the post-op 1st & 7th day. The pre-operative ecchymosis score among the groups showed the similar distribution of ecchymosis scores respectively indicating no statistically significant difference between the groups (p=1.00) and the pre-operative oedema showed no statistically significant difference between the groups (p=0.56) . The frequency of post-operative ecchymosis scores on the seventh day among the groups in which the results were identical to those on the first day, with 40% of patients in the 3D pen splint group showing mild ecchymosis compared to 10% in the aluminium foil group. In this study, we compared the efficacy of traditional aluminium nasal splints with 3D pen designed nasal splint, we evaluated ecchymosis, pain, and oedema in patients treated with either aluminium or 3D-pen designed splints. Our results showed that patients who received 3D-pen designed splints experienced significantly reduced ecchymosis and oedema on 7th day, and reported lower pain scores compared to those who received aluminium splints. The customized fit of the 3D-pen designed Nasal splints appeared to promote optimal healing, minimizing postoperative complications and enhancing patient comfort.
