Tinnicare and Tinnipatch: A Smart Phone Integrated, Non-Occlusive, Bone-Conduction Platform for Personalized Digital Tinnitus Retraining Therapy

This study conducted with research grant from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) evaluates the clinical effectiveness and user feedback of the Tinnicare Android App, a smartphone-based mobile application and Tinnipatch non-invasive, frequency-matched bone-conduction sound therapy (Langguth et al. in Lancet Neurol 12(9):920–930, 2013) device among both healthcare experts and patients undergoing Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT). A prospective observational study was conducted involving 25 clinical experts and 33 patients. Participants used the Tinnicare App alongside the Tinnipatch device for 8 months. Monthly Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) (Triggs in JAMA Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg 145(7):597–608, 2019) scores were recorded, along with feedback on usage success and satisfaction. Frequency and intensity matching using white or narrow band noise ranging from 250 to 8 kHz, and 25–70 dB were used for therapy customization. Sustained improvement in Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) scores is observed in study population from a mean baseline of 64.6–44.84 by month 8 an improvement of 22.74 points. The final Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) scores did not differ significantly with p = 0.271. Successful usage was reported by 81.8% of population. Expert feedback was predominantly positive or neutral (92%), and follow-up completion exceeded 87% across both groups. The review discusses the research methodology, participant demographics, device functionality, clinical outcomes, and future implications of these innovative technologies in tinnitus care. The Tinnicare App and Tinnipatch device demonstrated consistent Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) improvement in both experts and patients, with high user satisfaction and minimal dropout. These findings support the viability of mobile-based Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) solutions in both clinical and real-world settings.
