Exploring Binaural Processing Tests in Children at Risk of Central Auditory Processing Disorder

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of comparing subjective and objective assessments of binaural interaction processes to identify children at risk for central auditory processing disorder (CAPD). This comparison is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of CAPD identification.
MethodA total of 124 children underwent the screening for central auditory processing disorder, the normal auditory, speech- language and cognitive skills. Based on the screening results the children were grouped into children at risk and without risk of CAPD. The subjective evaluation utilized a dichotic word test in Tamil, while objective assessment employed speech-evoked cortical responses using /da/ stimuli. The subjective and objectives tests were completed for the 68 children.
ResultsThe dichotic word test effectively differentiated children with and without CAPD risk, revealing subpar performance in right ear and double correct scores children with risk of CAPD. In contrast, objective measures demonstrated no significant differences in mean latencies of cortical potentials across groups, although amplitude variations (P1, N1) differed significantly, suggesting amplitude as a more reliable indicator of CAPD risk than latency. The study also found correlations between dichotic test performance and objective measures, indicating a complex relationship between auditory processing and brain function.
ConclusionsThese findings highlight the importance of considering both the subjective and objective tests while assessing individuals with central auditory processing disorder.
