A Ten-Year Analysis of the Relationship Between Soft Palate Dimensions and Sagittal Position of Maxilla; A Cross Sectional Study

The soft palate constitutes the posterior extension of the hard palate, comprising the posterior third of the oral cavity. The frequency of soft palate variants has been previously reported. However, earlier studies were conducted with insufficient samples. We investigated the prevailing soft palate type and the association between Angle’s classification with soft palate dimensions. In this retrospective, clinical-based study, we analyzed 843 lateral cephalometric radiographs taken from 2014 to 2023 in Babol, Iran, to identify morphological variants of soft palates. The participants included both males and females aged 15 and older. We examined the relationship between Angle’s classification and soft palate dimensions using the ANOVA models. Among 843 eligible patients analyzed for prevalence, 418 (49.58%, 95% CI: 46.16–53.02) had a leaf-shaped soft palate, and 16 (1.90%, 95% CI: 1.03–3.06) had a butt-shaped soft palate. Our findings revealed a significant association between velar length (VL) and pharyngeal depth (PD) with skeletal classification in the adjusted model (gender). The standardized mean difference and eta squared demonstrated a trivial to weak relationship for VL and PD, and a non-meaningful relationship for velar width (VW) and need’s ratio (NR) in both models. Leaf-shaped soft palates are the most common type and are significantly correlated with malocclusion. Recognizing this association can improve surgical planning and the prediction of airway obstruction in OSA patients, leading to more effective treatments.
