Effect of Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery on Headache in Patients of Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Choncha Bullosa

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common condition characterized by long-term inflammation of the sinuses, often leading to symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pain, and headaches. Concha bullosa, a condition where the nasal turbinates (structures inside the nose) are abnormally air-filled, can further exacerbate these symptoms. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive procedure commonly employed to treat CRS, aiming to restore sinus drainage and alleviate associated symptoms.
MethodsAll the patients who presented to the Department of ENT with symptoms suggestive of Chronic Rhinosinusitis and headache as their major complaint were included in this study. Detailed history taking with clinical evaluation was done. Patients underwent Diagnostic Nasal Endoscopy and CT Evaluation for specific feature of concha bullosa. With a proper consent, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery was done. Post operative clinical and endoscopic evaluation was performed at 4 and 8 weeks.
ResultsWhen sinusitis is present, concha bullosa is also present in 37 cases. This suggests a correlation where sinusitis commonly coexists with concha bullosa, potentially indicating that the presence of CB may contribute to or be associated with sinus inflammation.
ConclusionThe findings of this study reveal a clear trend towards improvement in headache symptoms post-operatively. Many patients reported a reduction in the intensity and frequency of headaches, often experiencing complete resolution or substantial relief from their previously debilitating symptoms. This supports the efficacy of FESS not only in addressing sinus-related issues but also in alleviating associated headaches, which are commonly attributed to the underlying CRS and anatomical variations such as Concha Bullosa.
