Background <p>Oral squamous cell carcinoma is one of the major health concerns globally, accounting to approximately 95% of total head and neck malignancies. Despite advancements in disease diagnosis, the molecular mechanism underlying this disease is still obscure. Oral microbiome consists of microorganisms residing in oral cavity which have physiological effects on disease development including oral cancer.</p> Objective <p>This review aims to elucidate the changes in the oral microbiome due to risk factors. In extrapolation to this, the effect of microbial dysbiosis in altering the long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) levels and the impact of this alteration in the initiation and progression of OSCC has been summarized.</p> Methods <p>Contribution of well-established risk factors (i.e. tobacco, alcohol, areca nut chewing, and HPV infections) have been analyzed in oral microbiome dysbiosis. The dysregulated lncRNAs levels have been presented in this review after critically analyzing reported studies. Furthermore, the role of all these impending factors have been linked with disease development.</p> Results <p>The study indicates that dysbiosis of the oral microbiome (involving genera such as Fusobacterium, Pseudomonas, Bifidobacterium, and Actinobacter) caused by certain risk factors lead to aberrant lncRNA expression in oral cavity. This can serve as a baseline for a biomarker identification in OSCC for clinical and treatment purposes. Analyzing circulating tumor cells in saliva, urine, and blood, along with screening of microbes can emerges as a promising tool for early detection and and monitoring of OSCC progression.</p>

Background

Objective
