Masseter Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential Findings in Individuals with Motion Sickness

Masseter vestibular evoked myogenic potential (mVEMP) is an acoustically evoked potential recorded from the masseter muscle. It assesses the vestibulo-masseteric reflex pathway specifically for saccular function. mVEMP may offer an alternative method for traditional Cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) and Ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP) to assess the vestibular system. Its usefulness in certain clinical conditions, such as motion sickness, is gaining some attention.
Aim of the StudyTo evaluate the integrity of the vestibulo-masseteric reflex pathway using mVEMP in individuals with and without motion sickness.
Method50 individuals in the age group of 15–24 years were recruited. Individuals were divided into groups A and B based on the motion sickness severity scores. The mVEMP was recorded for both ears separately using a 500 Hz tone burst stimulus, presented through insert earphones at 95dBnHL.
ResultFor group A, the p1 and n1 were elicited at the mean latency of 13.6 ± 0.7 ms and 20.6 ± 1.11 ms respectively, with a mean amplitude of 109.89 ± 50.13 µV. For group B, the p1 and n1 were elicited at the mean latency of 13.8 ± 0.7 ms and 20.8 ± 0.89 ms respectively, with mean amplitude of 125.76 ± 54.6 µV. The interaural amplitude asymmetry ratio (IAAR) was clinically within normal limits for both groups. No significant difference was found in peak latency, peak-to-peak amplitude and IAAR between the two groups (p > 0.05).
ConclusionLonger exposure to the triggering situation (travelling) may improve the function of the vestibular system, reducing the discomfort to an individual with motion sickness and resulting in normal mVEMP responses.
