Radiographic Study of Nasal Septal Body in Patients with Deviated Nasal Septum and Chronic Rhinosinusitis: A One Year Observational Study

The Nasal Septal Body (NSB) is present in the anterior part of the septum situated superior to the level of inferior turbinate and anterior to middle turbinate. As septal body is present in the region of the nasal valve area congestion of the septal body can result in changes to the nasal cross-sectional area and create resistance to the airflow. The RadiAnt DICOM viewer was used to evaluate CT images. Each side was evaluated for septal body (SB) length, height and thickness, inferior turbinate medial and lateral mucosa thickness, internal nasal valve area, septal deviation and sinusitis. A total of 60 CT-PNS were studied and results were categorized into three groups. Group 1- DNS, group 2 - CRS, group 3 - CRS + DNS, of which 30 were DNS group, 16 were CRS, 14 were CRS + DNS. In right deviation the mean septal body thickness on right nasal cavity was 3.76 mm the mean septal body thickness in left nasal cavity was 4.58 mm. In case of left deviation, the mean thickness on right cavity was 4.48 mm left cavity was 3.62 mm and these values were statistically significant. In DNS and CRS + DNS in addition to contralateral inferior turbinate hypertrophy septal body thickness is also increased. In CRS patients along with inferior turbinate hypertrophy, the septal body thickness is also increased on the diseased side. The current study enlightens us about the importance of septal body and its changes in septal deviation and chronic rhinosinusitis.
