Physiologic Voice Therapy for Vocal Nodules Using Water Resistance Therapy: A Long-Term Study

The present study explores the long-term effects of a physiologic voice therapy method, water resistance therapy, on the perceptual and acoustic parameters and a multiparametric measure of DSI for patients with vocal nodules. A pre-test-post-test group design was employed to study the efficacy of water resistance therapy. The study was conducted on ten individuals (20–55 years) with dysphonia diagnosed as having vocal nodules. All the participants received water resistance therapy for 30 min sessions thrice per week, with an additional home therapy program. The effectiveness of the therapy was evaluated from the measurements of vocal parameters using maximum phonation duration, auditory-perceptual measurement and acoustic parameters (F0, Jitter, Shimmer, and DSI) before and after therapy. WRT resulted in significant improvements in maximum phonation duration, perceptual measures, jitter, shimmer, and DSI values. Improving multiple vocal parameters supports the idea that WRT may provide a comprehensive benefit to voice function, making it a valuable addition to therapeutic interventions for vocal fold pathologies.
