Study of Correlation of the Severity of Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Serum 25-Hydroxy (OH) Vitamin D Levels

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is an inflammation of the nose and the paranasal sinuses. Nearly 14.6% of people in India have been reported to have sinusitis. Similarly Vitamin D deficiency prevails in epidemic proportions all over the Indian subcontinent. Its deficiency is postulated to subsequently trigger the pathogenesis and progression of chronic rhinosinusitis. The study included 108 confirmed cases of chronic rhinosinusitis aged between 18 and 60 years. The severity of chronic rhinosinusitis was assessed using NCCT NOSE and PNS (Lund Mackay Score: LMS), Diagnostic Nasal Endoscopy (Lund Kennedy score LKS) and SNOT-22 questionnaire & blood sample analysis of all subjects was done for estimation of 25 (OH) Vitamin D levels. The data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences, version 21.0. Vitamin D levels were shown to be significantly correlated with the severity of CRS (p < 0.001). Vitamin D levels ranged from 12.5 to 64.4 ng/ml with a mean of 25.34 ± 10.58 ng/ml. Vitamin D deficiency, insufficiency and Sufficiency was seen in 39.8%, 34.3% and 25.9% cases respectively. Patients with deficient vitamin D levels had considerably higher severity scores than patients with normal status. In our study we found that degree of CRS severity was significantly correlated with 25 (OH) vitamin D status. Patients with insufficient and deficient status had considerably higher severity scores than patients with normal status.
