Is Measuring the Potential for Active Ageing in Argentina an Achievable Challenge?
摘要
Active ageing has been recognized as a key objective in public policies aimed at promoting the well-being of older adults. In Europe, the Active Ageing Index (AAI) is a widely used multidimensional tool for monitoring this phenomenon. This article critically analyzes each of the AAI’s domains, proposing adaptations relevant to the Argentine context in each case. These adaptations address cultural and social differences in the measurement of each phenomenon, as well as the availability, representativeness, and relevance of national statistical sources. The results show that, while most indicators are technically replicable, substantial adaptations are required in several dimensions to ensure their validity and local applicability. Using the available national data sources, an illustrative estimation of the AAI for Argentina is also computed, highlighting the methodological limitations that arise when applying the European framework to a middle-income context. This methodological proposal lays the groundwork for the development of a national instrument for measuring active ageing, with the potential for implementation in different regions of the country and as input for public policy.
