Activity Preferences and Time use of Older Adults in Ilorin Metropolis

Activity participation among older adults is fundamental to determining their well-being and provides insight into how daily goals are achieved. Ageing can affect how older adults use time and space. This study examined the activity preferences of older adults and their time use within Ilorin metropolis. A total of 384 older adults were sampled, questionnaire and a one-day activity time-table was used. Descriptive statistics was used for data analysis; Space-time geographic concepts were equally used for the simplification of the relational Spatio-temporal activities. The result showed that older adults activity preference was: (1) recreation/reflection, (2) religious activities, (3) reading, (4) household chores, (5) income-earning activities, (6) watching TV, (7) preparing food, (8) caring for oneself, and (9) driving. Understanding the activity preferences of older adults can help planners incorporate their needs into a broader developmental objective. The study concluded that the activity pattern and preferences of older adults created the enabling environment for them to live actively and achieve their daily goals.
