<p>Using an exemplary media portrayal of the situation in the general social services, this article presents a&#xa0;critical, experience-based examination of the deficiencies depicted there. The question is discussed as to the extent to which criticism of the system, while appropriate, can also hinder development within the general social services themselves. The core thesis is that awareness of one’s own potential and ability to act should not be overshadowed by criticism of the system. The ability to adapt to a&#xa0;challenging situation—at all levels—appears to be crucial for successfully overcoming it.</p>
