<p>Employees in social work are confronted with particular work-related psychological stress that can lead to the development of emotional exhaustion and burnout. In this study, the tasks and the work-related psychological stress and strain outcomes of social services in inpatient healthcare were examined. The descriptive statistics show that the organization and coordination of aftercare as part of the discharge management was reported as the predominant area of activity of social services in the inpatient healthcare system. This task dominates in the hospital sector in particular. The high presenteeism for social services is also striking. The results also indicate a&#xa0;higher level of work-related psychological stress as well as strain outcomes in hospital social services compared to social services in preventive care or rehabilitation facilities. There is a&#xa0;need for the comprehensive implementation of risk assessments of mental stress to address the requirements of social services in the inpatient healthcare sector.</p>
