<p>Social workers have been called upon to adopt a&#xa0;“poverty-conscious stance” while a&#xa0;potential “socio-political mandate” has been debated. However, the extent to which social workers advocate a&#xa0;redistribution of wealth and combating poverty by the state has not been researched to date. This article provides an initial assessment that compares the attitudes of the social workers with other occupational groups, links them to their personal financial situation and examines their views on the impact of social benefits on inequality and poverty. Ideologically, social workers place themselves distinctly to the ‘left’ and are generally more in favour of state policies aimed to reduce inequality and poverty, despite their own material situation not being indicative of this. At the same time, the social workers demonstrate a&#xa0;higher recognition of social policy in terms of its achievements in reducing inequality and poverty.</p>
