Psychoactive substances, especially illegalised ones, have been an integral part of my life for four and a half decades; sometimes more, sometimes less formative and in different ways; for better and for worse. I owe them intoxicating, overwhelming moments full of intensity; they have sharpened my senses, euphorised and calmed me, boosted and comforted me. They were an important tool in my search for identity, excitement and borderline experiences. They offered me a home and protection, were my medicine against fear, loneliness and excessive demands. A drug that almost killed me in the end: I experienced addiction and withdrawal, overdose and imprisonment and deep despair. Only rudimentary consumption skills were also a formative element and influenced my life and experiences. A skill that was hardly or not at all promoted by the prevention and help system at the time and in my experience, despite all the progress made, is still not given the necessary importance across the board. Even in the social discourse on the subject of substance use, in which I am actively involved as a sufferer, publicist and prevention practitioner, this topic is neglected.
