摘要

Even 30 years after the end of apartheid, South Africa is still a country characterised by great social inequality. Social work is seen as important for social development and is categorised by the political authorities as a highly sought-after professional group. The first training programmes date back to the 1920s. These were embedded in the apartheid system. After the democratic elections of 1994, both training and practice were reorganised and now follow a human rights and development-oriented, empowerment-oriented approach to social work. The curricula have been redesigned accordingly in recent decades and decolonised, indigenous and Afrocentric philosophies have been incorporated. In South Africa, social worker is a protected job title. It requires at least a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college. Social workers must register with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP).
