Contact with relatives is systematically made so difficult by imprisonment that constructive social work is hardly possible. The legal, factual and financial basis for social work with relatives inside and outside of prisons is fragmented and inadequate. Above all, the specific needs of relatives are not sufficiently recognized and taken into account. In addition to legal reforms of prison law, the article proposes a central office for work with relatives at ministry level in each federal state in Germany in order to create suitable framework conditions for social work with relatives of inmates.
