This article argues that the exact need for social work services must always remain undetermined in view of the constitutive personal reference. However, the realisation of this fact should not prevent the possible systematic needs assessment from being realised—but always in parallel and in correspondence with the analysis of the practice of case-related needs assessment and the self-critical reflection of the role of social work in the context of social needs construction.
