This article addresses the increasing importance of governmental approval for relevant degree programs for (potential) students and graduates in the field of social work. It begins by discussing the role of the governmental approval in regulating access to the profession and then provides a cursory insight into the discourse and forces that have shaped the debate on governmental approval since the 1970s. Finally, development options for higher education policy and course development are proposed.
