<p>In this paper, a single-layer micro strip patch antenna with a wide range of harmonic suppression is proposed for 5.8 GHz application. The wide range of harmonic suppression is achieved using an H-shaped defected ground structure (DGS) along with indirect micro strip line (coupled) feeding to the patch. We have also proposed empirical formulae to calculate the dimensions of the “H” shaped DGS for effective suppression of higher order harmonics. The proposed design exhibits an effective way to suppress higher order harmonics up to 16 GHz. The gain pattern is like filter response and its maximum value at 5.8 GHz is 7.76 dBi. The impedance bandwidth is 80 MHz which is suitable for many applications at 5.8 GHz. The overall size including the feeding structure and ground plane is 0.77λ<sub>0</sub> × 0.67λ<sub>0</sub> × 0.015λ<sub>0</sub>.</p>
