<p>The power requirement in India is growing at a rapid rate with the increase in its population and it is expected to grow further in the upcoming decade. To cope with this demand, a similar rapid increase in the generation capacity of power is a dire need of the moment. India is a coastal country which motivated the research and exploration in the offshore regions to locate the suitable sites for the installation of new offshore wind farms in order to provide a support to the overall power generation capacity of India. This research is focused on finding out the best available site for installation of India’s first offshore wind farm. Eight appropriate zones in Tamil Nadu’s offshore region have been identified by the National Institute of Wind Energy. These zones are quantitatively compared based on number of factors and findings demonstrate how decision-making factors operate and how important they are in relation to choosing the best location. Taking into account the cumulative effects of decision variables, zone A perform numerically better than all other zones. The results of this study are of high importance as it gives a marker for the installation of India’s first cost-effective offshore wind farm.</p>
