Structural wall plan density requirement to reduce seismic risk of RC buildings under near-fault earthquake scenario

This study presents a proposal on mechanics-based graded structural wall plan density (SWPD) requirement in reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. Fifteen buildings, of three different categories (viz., normal, important, and critical) located in five different seismic regions (Zones II to VI), are designed and detailed considering the proposed SWPD. The study uses nonlinear static analyses to estimate the inherent structural capacity at different damage states and nonlinear dynamic analyses to estimate the demand imposed by earthquake ground motions in both far-fault and near-fault scenarios. The study also helps identify dynamic shear force amplification that needs to be considered in shear design of RC structural walls. Finally, seismic fragility analysis is performed by using multiple stripe method and the seismic risk associated with the designed buildings is evaluated. It is observed that, the performance of RC buildings with the proposed graded requirement of SWPD is satisfactory.
