Study the effect of laser surface remelting on the characterization of pre-sputtered commercially pure titanium

In this paper, a commercially pure titanium (Cp Ti) substrate was coated using radio frequency sputtering (RF) to create a thin film of TiO2 under controlled conditions in a vacuum chamber at room temperature. The effect of laser surface remelting was investigated using a pulsed Nd: YAG laser. FESEM, OPM, XRD, and AFM were used to observe the microstructure, phases, morphology, and roughness. Also, the electrochemical corrosion test has been carried out to determine the corrosion resistance in 3.5% NaCl solution before and after laser treatment. The results indicated that the microstructure of the Cp Ti substrate after both RF sputtering and Laser surface treatment transformed to a martensite structure of (α`) due to the rapid solidification. XRD analysis revealed the formation of alpha (α) and anatase structure of TiO2 after sputtering and transforming to the martensite phase (α`) after laser treatment. The crystallinity also increased. Cp Ti after sputtering has the lowest corrosion rate in a salt solution if compared with Cp Ti after laser surface remelting.
