摘要

Biofuels such as biodiesel derived from renewable sources can potentially replace petroleum-based fuels providing a greener, carbon-neutral alternative. In this pursuit, algal oil-based biodiesel has emerged as a promising alternative. The present study provides a simulation-based approach in Aspen Plus to modelling a refinery which would convert algal oil to biodiesel for commercial use. The study also compares two refineries with and without methanol recycling and performs a techno-economic analysis. From this study, we could conclude that from 8766 tonne/year of algal oil, 8411.35 tonne/year of biodiesel can be produced and using a methanol recycle significantly reduces capital, utility and raw materials cost.
