<p>In this article, we briefly review the concept, mechanism, quantification, and functional significance of structural colours. The feathers of the peacock’s tail are taken as an example to quantify iridescent structural colours. We review how structural colours can be measured in the Indian college lab setting, and illustrate some simple interdisciplinary experiments that students of physics, biology, and chemistry can perform. This article aims to help readers understand the importance of non-pigmentary colours present in nature and their applications in industry.</p>
